Marcelle Deschênes

Marcelle Deschênes (born March 2, 1939 in Price , Québec ) is a Canadian composer.

Marcelle Deschênes studied from 1963 to 1967 at the University of Montreal with Jean Papineau-Couture and Serge Garant and continued her education in Paris with the Groupe de recherches musicales under François Bayle , Henri Chiarucci and Guy Reibel . In 1969 she took part in a collective work of the Group de Recherches, Musiques éclatées , which was performed at the Festival d'Avignon .

From 1968 to 1970 she took courses in music and audiovisual technology with Pierre Schaeffer at the Paris Conservatory and studied music analysis at the École César-Franck with Olivier Alain . She then studied music aesthetics with Daniel Charles , music ethnology with Claude Laloum and analysis with Jean-Étienne Marie at the University of Paris and also music ethnology at the École pratique des hautes études des Musée des Arts et Traditions populaires .

After her return to Canada in 1971, Deschênes took part in the collective work Si ... ... longtemps , which was performed the following year at the University of Montreal. From 1972 to 1977 she taught at the electronic music studio at Laval University and took part in the development of its sound library. She composed music for experimental video films and the NFB film Le Port de Montréal and took part in the performances of the group GIMEL ( Groupe d'interprétation de musique électroacoustique de Laval ) between 1974 and 1976 .

In 1977 she was one of the founding members of ACREQ ( Association pour la création et la recherche électroacoustiques du Québec ), and in 1979 she founded the electroacoustic studio Bruit Blanc . The following year she became professor of electroacoustic composition at the University of Montreal.

Deschênes' works include multimedia performances, installations, video productions, electroacoustic and instrumental music, and actions with non-musicians. She has received numerous international awards, including several prizes at the Concours international de musique électroacoustique de Bourges .
