Groupe de recherches musicales

The Groupe de recherches musicales ( GRM ) is an institute for research into electroacoustic music , located in Paris.

History and meaning

The GRM was founded in 1958 by Pierre Schaeffer and was one of several theoretical and at the same time experimental groups that were bundled under the umbrella of Schaeffer's Service de la Recherche on the French radio ORTF . The aim of the GRM was to develop a platform for research in the fields of audiovisual communication, music and other audible or media phenomena. To this day, a large number of well-known musique concrète composers are associated with the group. Its members included well-known composers such as François Bayle , Michel Chion , Luc Ferrari , Jean Michel Jarre , Jacques Lejeune , Ivo Malec , Bernard Parmegiani , Guy Reibel , Pierre Schaeffer and André Boucourechliev .

The dominance of male composers is striking in the public perception of the GRM, although women like Mireille Chamass-Kyrou , Françoise Barrière , Beatriz Ferreyra , Éliane Radigue , Christine Groult , Michèle Bokanowski , Elżbieta Sikora , Joanna Bruzdowicz , Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux or Annette Voulombe Saint-Marcoux Gorne played a decisive role in the development of electroacoustic music around Schaeffer from the beginning and contributed to the further development of electroacoustic music. Different generations of women in the GRM "repeatedly failed due to the same hurdles": Their independent compositional work turned out to be difficult, as the women often had access to the necessary apparatus and equipment in the studio difficult or even denied. In addition, even the most talented female composers often had to wait in vain for their works to be performed there; by Evelyn Gayou , who has been a member of the group for 35 years, only one piece was performed there.
