Joanna Bruzdowicz (born May 17, 1943 in Warsaw ) is a Polish composer and music critic .

Bruzdowicz studied composition with Kazimierz Sikorski and piano with Irena Protasewicz and Wanda Osakiewicz at the Warsaw Music Academy until 1966 . With a grant from the French government, she continued her studies in Paris from 1968–70 with Nadia Boulanger , Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Schaeffer . She was active in the Groupe de recherches musicales and wrote the dissertation Mathematics and Logic in Contemporary Music at the Sorbonne . She then settled in Belgium as a composer.

She is the founder and president of the Chopin Szymanowski Society in Belgium and co-founder of the Polish section of Jeunesses Musicales . In addition to operas , symphonic works and chamber music , Bruzdowicz also composed numerous film and television film scores . In 2001 she was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta .

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
