Yves Angelo (born January 22, 1956 in Meknes , Morocco ) is a French cameraman , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Yves Angelo was born in 1956 as the son of Isi Angelo, a dentist of Bulgarian origin with distant Venetian ancestors, in the French protectorate of French Morocco that still existed at the time . In his childhood and youth he regularly attended a cinema built during the colonial era in his hometown of Meknes and developed a great passion for film. He took photos with a Leica M3 that his father had bought in the 1950s and thus sharpened his awareness of his surroundings, which later also helped him in his work as a cameraman. At the age of 17, he moved to Paris after having passed the entrance exam to the École Louis-Lumière film school .

From the late 1970s he gained his first practical experience as a camera assistant in films such as Jeanne Moreau's Girl Years (1979) and Bertrand Tavernier's A Sunday in the Country (1984). In the directorial debut of the renowned cameraman Bruno Nuytten , the large-scale biopic Camille Claudel (1988) with Isabelle Adjani in the title role, Angelo was employed as Pierre Lhomme's camera assistant . After the success of the film, Angelo received numerous offers to work as a freelance cameraman. Just two years later, Alain Corneau's road movie Nocturnal India (1989) first won the César in the Best Camera category. In 1992 he won the French film award for Corneau's costume film The Seventh String (1991) again. After that, Angelo, who now also received offers from Hollywood , but turned them down, worked under directors such as Claude Miller and Claude Sautet .

In 1994, the third César followed for his work on Claude Berris Germinal (1993), which is why Angelo, alongside Thierry Arbogast and Philippe Rousselot , was able to win the César most often in the Best Camera category. In the same year he made his directorial debut with the Balzac film The Resurrection of Colonel Chabert with Gérard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant , for which he also wrote the screenplay. For the film he received a César nomination in the category Best First Work and the Golden Pyramid at the Cairo International Film Festival .

His third directorial work, the film drama Voleur de vie , for which he was able to win Pierre Lhomme as cameraman and Emmanuelle Béart and Sandrine Bonnaire as actresses, took part in the 1998 competition for the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival . Since 2001 he has been working mainly as a cameraman again. As such, he worked particularly often under the direction of Alain Corneau, for whom he staged, after Nocturnal India and The Seventh String , Mit Staunen und Zittern (2003), Words in Blue (2005) and Le deuxième souffle (2007). From 2017 he worked repeatedly under the direction of Anne Fontaine . Their joint productions include the coming-of-age film Marvin (2017) and the modern Snow White adaptation Blanche comme neige (2019), each with Isabelle Huppert , as well as the police drama Police (2020).

His daughter Julie Angelo has been working regularly as his camera assistant since 2015.
