Germinal is the film adaptation of the eponymous novel by Émile Zola by Claude Berri from 1993.
action
The story takes place in the mining town of Voreux in northern France in the mid-19th century. Étienne Lantier, an unemployed mechanic, comes to town and finds a place to stay with the Maheu family. He falls in love with the eldest daughter Catherine. He finds a job in the coal mine of Voreux. This is badly paid, but Étienne is not picky because he depends on the money. Soon, however, he was so outraged by the inhumane working conditions that he, a staunch socialist, persuaded the miners to revolt.
The strike led by Étienne puts the entire coal industry in the area in great trouble, but the living conditions of working class families deteriorate further as wages are lost. Meanwhile, the entrepreneurs are bringing Belgian temporary workers to help. The workers are outraged and want to fight back when the military intervenes. A shooting ensues in which several insurgents, including old Maheu and his young son, are killed. Because of hunger and desperation, the strikers have to continue their work and are now paid even less.
Before the workers drive in, the anarchist Souvarine sabotages the mine, causing it to collapse. Except for Etienne, Catherine and their former fiancé, all are saved. Etienne slays Chaval, Catherine's lover, in a fight in the confines of the pit and has to watch Catherine starve to death. When the rescue teams get to them, only Étienne is left. After his rescue, he leaves Voreux and wants to continue fighting for the victory of socialism.
criticism
The film-dienst criticized the remake of the Zola novel, which in no way does justice to the original, but praised the female cast around Miou-Miou. Germinal would quickly wane the audience's interest, since “the characterization of social groups is exhausted in black and white painting and the main role is wrongly cast”.
Awards
The film was nominated twelve times for the French César film award in 1994, but could only prevail in two categories, Best Cinematography and Best Costumes ( Moidele Bickel , Sylvie Gautrelet and Caroline de Vivaise ). The other ten nominations were in the categories of Best Film , Best Director , Best Actress (Miou-Miou), Best Supporting Actor (Jean-Roger Milo), Best Supporting Actress (Judith Henry), Best Screenplay , Best Original Score , Best Sound , Best Art Direction and Best cut .
