The Resurrection of Colonel Chabert (original title: Le Colonel Chabert ) is a French film adaptation of Honoré de Balzac's story Colonel Chabert from 1994 with Gérard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant in the lead roles.

action

Colonel Chabert, who Napoleon Bonaparte with the cuirassiers glorious in war fighting and after the Battle of Eylau in 1807 declared dead was, returns to after ten years of wandering through Europe penniless Paris back. He visits the lawyer Derville, who should help him to get his identity and property back. Derville is fascinated by Chabert's story. He takes over the case and invests his own capital, although everyone else thinks Chabert is a con man.

Chabert's marriage should also be legally recognized again. His wife Rose, who believed she was a widow, has since remarried to the highly respected Count Ferraud, who wants to use the money that actually belongs to Chabert to expand his political power. Fearing that the annulment of her second marriage could cost Rose her assets and her social status, she denies Chabert's identity before the notary.

When Derville also takes on the countess's representation, the lawyer finds himself in a very interesting position. Since the Countess is convinced that Chabert still loves her, she invites him to her luxurious house when Count Ferraud is away. She tries to appease Chabert and offers him a severance payment if he signs papers in return in which he denies being Chabert. Derville warns Chabert about the offer, which is why Chabert demands a large sum from the Countess, which she is not prepared to pay. When they finally can agree on an amount and Chabert is about to sign the papers, he thinks about it again. His honor is more important to him than the money. He goes away empty-handed and spends the last years of his life impoverished in a hospice .

Reviews

The lexicon of international films described The Resurrection of Colonel Chabert as a “[well] played and excellently photographed literary adaptation based on Balzac, which unfolds an exciting intrigue, addresses questions of lies and truthfulness and which conceals the true identity of the mysterious man until the last moment ". According to Prisma , director Yves Angelo realized "an exciting and aesthetically appealing remake of the well-known Balzac story". In doing so, he put “the focus on a staging similar to a chamber play” and created “a gripping confusion about lies and deceit with remarkable actors”.

Janet Maslin of the New York Times came to the conclusion that the leading actors Gérard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant had played their roles “as expected” with expertise, but that Fabrice Luchini had succeeded in “the most amazing portrayal” as a lawyer. Yves Angelo again made “a careful directorial debut” and confirmed “his visual expertise”.

Awards

At the César award ceremony in 1995 , Colonel Chabert's resurrection was nominated in six categories: Best Actor (Gérard Depardieu), Best Supporting Actor (Fabrice Luchini), Best Cinematography (Bernard Lutic), Best Costumes ( Franca Squarciapino ), Best Production Design ( Bernard Vézat ) and Best First Work (Yves Angelo). However, the film was unable to prevail against the competition in any of the categories.
