Vilhelm Lilljeborg , also William Lilljeborg. (Born October 6, 1816 in Helsingborg ; † July 24, 1908 in Uppsala ), was a Swedish professor of zoology . He devoted himself primarily to the fauna of his own country and has published several comprehensive papers on it. His specialties were crustaceans and marine mammals .

Life

Lilljeborg was the son of the headmaster and later pastor of West Vram in Skåne Jöns Peter Lilljeborg and his wife Hedda (née Hultberg). He enrolled in 1834 at the University of Lund , where in 1840 he the title of Bachelor received, the following year he became a Doctor Ph. D. The tradition of his family following his father was a minister, he laid in 1843 and an examination of theology from . From 1845 to 1854 he was assistant professor and lecturer in zoology at his university. In 1853 he passed a lecture examination in Uppsala, whereupon he was appointed professor in the same position the following year. From 1854 to 1882 he taught at Uppsala University. In 1877 he also received an honorary doctorate from the medical faculty in Uppsala. In connection with his work, Lilljeborg undertook several study trips at home and abroad and expeditions to Scandinavia and Northern Russia, including 1848 to Russia and 1865 to London and Paris .

Following his example, Sven Nilsson , he expanded his knowledge of the Swedish fauna. Lilljeborg was a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences (elected February 13, 1816), the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund and an honorary member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala and the Royal Society of Science and Learning in Gothenburg . He also belonged to numerous foreign associations, such as the zoological society in London, the botanical society in Vienna, the Société des Sciences naturelles de Cherbourg and the Linnean Society of London .

Lilljeborg was married twice. 1854 with Sara Maria Ingeborg (née Holm) and 1862 with Eva Charlotta (née Lindstedt).
