Gilles Tremblay

Gilles Léonce Tremblay , OQ (born September 6, 1932 in Arvida ; † July 27, 2017 ) was a Canadian composer and music teacher .

Tremblay took private lessons with Jocelyne Binet , Isabelle Delorme , Jean Papineau-Couture and Edmond Trudel and studied from 1949 to 1954 at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec with Claude Champagne and Germaine Malépart . He also attended summer courses at the Marlboro School of Music in Vermont in the early 1950s and studied music history with Jean Vallerand at the University of Montreal in 1953 .

From 1954 to 1957 Tremblay studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Yvonne Loriod and Olivier Messiaen , at the same time he learned to play Ondes Martenot with its inventor Maurice Martenot and deepened his knowledge of electroacoustic instruments at the Darmstadt summer courses under Karlheinz Stockhausen .

1957–58 he studied counterpoint with Andrée Vaurabourg-Honegger . In the following years he took part in the recordings of the Groupe de recherches musicales under Pierre Schaeffer at the ORTF . In 1960 he again attended courses in Darmstadt with Pierre Boulez and Henri Pousseur .

Since 1961 he has taught at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec. In the 1960s he wrote manuscripts and music for various series of the CBC ( aroles de poètes , L'Homme américain , festivals ). He received the Prix ​​de musique Calixa-Lavallée for the music of the Québec Pavilion at Expo 67 .

In the following years he was a member of the juries of various international music competitions, went on concert tours and was a board member of the Québec Composers' Association for twenty years. In 1991 he was appointed officer of the Ordre national du Québec .
