Claude Champagne

Claude Champagne (born May 27, 1891 in Montreal ; † December 21, 1965 there ) was a Canadian composer .

Champagne was Orpha-F's music theory and piano student . Deveaux and later by Romain-Octave Pelletier . From the age of fourteen he studied violin with Albert Chamberland . After graduating from the National Conservatory in Montreal, he taught piano and violin and gave private lessons in music theory and harmony. He was also a member of the Canadian Grenadier Guards Band under Jean-Josaphat Gagnier .

From 1921 to 1928 he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with André Gedalge , Charles Koechlin and Raoul Laparra . He then worked at various music schools and at McGill University in Montreal as a music theory and composition teacher. From 1942 he was Assistant Director of the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal . His students included Violet Archer , Jocelyne Binet , François Brassard , Maurice Dela , Marvin Duchow , Richard Eaton , Serge Garant , Rhené Jaque , Roger Matton , Pierre Mercure , François Morel , Clermont Pépin , Gilles Tremblay , Robert Turner and Jean Vallerand .

In 1964, Champagne was honored for his work and work as a music teacher and promoter with a "Claude Champagne Year"; the National Film Board of Canada produced the film Bonsoir Claude Champagne , and the CBC presented a tribute to Claude Champagne .

His compositions, influenced by French-Canadian folk music, are in the tradition of Franck , Fauré and Debussy . His Parisian years were formative for him, during which he was able to record initial successes as a composer with performances of works such as Hercule et Omphale and Suite canadienne .
