Roger Matton

Roger Matton (born May 18, 1929 in Granby, Québec , † June 7, 2004 in Québec ) was a Canadian composer, music teacher and music ethnologist .

Life

Matton studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in Montreal with Claude Champagne , Gabriel Cusson , Isabelle Delorme and Arthur Letondal . In Paris he took private lessons from 1950 with Andrée Vaurabourg-Honegger and from 1952 with Nadia Boulanger . In addition, he studied in 1950 and from 1953 to 1954 at the Conservatoire de Paris with Olivier Messiaen .

After returning to Canada, Matton worked for the CBC . After studying with the ethnologist and anthropologist Marius Barbeau at the Canadian Museum of Civilization , Matton worked from 1956 for twenty years in the Archives de folklore at Laval University . Here he transcribed, among other things, over three hundred folk song recordings on tape by Dominique Gauthier , a selection of which appeared in print and as a recording. He also taught composition at Laval University (his best-known student was Alain Gagnon ), from 1960 history of contemporary music and from 1963 to 1989 ethnomusicology.

Matton composed mainly large symphonic works and instrumental concerts, but also works for chamber music , organ and piano. He received the Prix ​​de création musicale canadienne in 1965 , the Prix ​​de musique Calixa-Lavallée in 1969 and the Lynch-Staunton Award in 1975 . In 1984 he became Officer of the Order of Canada . In 1987 Radio Canada International broadcast a four-part documentary of his works.
