Alain Gagnon

Alain Gagnon (born May 22, 1938 in Trois-Pistoles / Québec ; † March 26, 2017 in the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec ) was a Canadian composer and music teacher.

Gagnon learned to play the piano by himself before he was a piano student of Father Philippe-Antoine Lavoie at Rimouski Seminary from 1951 to 1958 . From 1960 he took organ lessons with Henri Gagnon at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec and composition lessons with Roger Matton at the University of Laval .

In 1964 and 1965 he studied with Jocelyne Binet . In 1965 he received a Prix ​​d'Europe , a grant from the Canada Council and a grant from the Ministry of Education of Québec and went to Paris , where he studied with Henri Dutilleux at the École normal de Musique and with Olivier Alain at the École César-Franck . In 1966 short study stays at the Institut de Sonologie in Utrecht and with André-François Marescotti at the Geneva Conservatory followed . From 1967 he taught music theory, analysis and composition at Laval University.
