Granby is a Canadian city ​​in southwest Québec and east of Montreal . The 2006 Canadian census showed a population of 47,637. Granby is the seat of La Haute-Yamaska . It is the fifth largest city in Montérégie after Longueuil , Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu , Brossard and Saint-Hyacinthe .

The city was founded at the end of the 18th century by three brothers who called the city Frost Village. In 1816 it became a self-governing municipality and in 1971 a city.

economy

Granby is the regional industrial center for textiles , construction timber and dairy products . It is also a tourist town, especially for the Granby Zoo , which was built in 1953 by Mayor Pierre-Horace Boivin.

Culture

The "Granby Song Festival" takes place annually in Granby, where many famous artists such as Jean Leloup and Luc Delarochelière perform. In addition, there is an international classic car show every summer .

The largest regional shopping center is the Galeries de Granby with over 100 shops.

Sports

From 1981 to 1997 Granby had an LHJMQ team called Granby Bisons , which renamed itself Granby Prédateurs in 1995 . The team won the Memorial Cup in 1996 . In 1997 the team was relocated to Sydney , Nova Scotia and renamed Cape Breton Screaming Eagles .
