Joal-Fadiouth is a coastal town in the Mbour department in the Thiès region , in western Senegal on the Atlantic coast of Petite-Côte .

Geographical location

Joal-Fadiouth is on the densely populated Petite-Côte, the southernmost town in the stretch of coast that belongs to the Thiès region. It is located on the border of the Fatick region , 94 kilometers south-east of Dakar and 34 kilometers from the Mbour prefecture .

The city consists of the three districts Ngazobil , Joal and Fadiouth . The urban area covers an area of 5035 hectares and extends along the coast for a length of about ten kilometers.

To the north lies the village of Ngazobil and rises on rocky limestone cliffs above the sea. South of Pointe Senti , the Joal district takes up the main part of the urban area and stretches along a wide sandy beach, which serves as a berth for a whole fleet of pirogues along its entire length , and which ends in a spit-like narrow peninsula. In the bay behind the peninsula, the district of Fadiouth is located on the Île de Fadiouth made of mussel shells , surrounded by the shallow water zone of the Mamanguedj lagoon .

This lagoon and the adjoining amphibious shore zones make up 60 percent of the urban area, so they are permanently or temporarily below sea level.

history

Joal-Fadiouth was first a canton, then a district (cercle). It obtained the status of a town (commune de plein exercice) under Law 66-20 of February 1, 1966, supplemented by Decree n ° 72-82 of February 3, 1972. It included the localities of Joal, Fadiouth within its borders and Ngazobil.

In the first few years the new community suffered so severely from the rivalry between the residents of Joal and those of Fadiouth that the then President Léopold Sédar Senghor , who was born in Joal, twice had to entrust neutral mediators to run the city administration. The prefect of the Mbour department also had to take over the management at times.

It was not until 1972 that the administration of the city was in the hands of an elected mayor (maire), supported by two to three deputies (adjoint), so that both rival districts were represented in the management functions. The following mayors were elected for initially six-year (currently five-year) terms of office:

  • 1972 to 1989 Emmanuel Sobel DIOUF (Fadiouth)
  • 1989 to 2014 Paul NDONG (Joal)
  • 2014 to 2019 Boucar DIOUF (Joal)

The 50th anniversary of the city's founding was the occasion for a festival week in April 2016.

population

The last censuses showed the following population figures for the city:

year Residents
1976 11,170
1988 19.003
2002 32,991
2013 45.903

traffic

Joal-Fadiouth is not served by the trunk road network in Senegal . Rather, it is the end of a 34 km long paved coastal road that branches off from the N 1 in Mbour . The connection between the districts of Joal and Fadiouth is ensured not only by boats but also by a 500 meter long wooden footbridge .
