About this picture

The Thiès region with the capital Thiès is a coastal region in the central west of Senegal . It is the second most populous region in the country after the capital region Dakar and it is the only region that shares a border with the capital region.

The country's main international airport, which opened in 2017, is Dakar-Blaise Diagne Airport, located in the Thiès region.

Geographical location

The Thiès region is part of two coastlines, each around 80 km long: north of the Cap-Vert peninsula on the Grande-Côte and south of the same on the Petite-Côte . It borders, starting from the north clockwise, with the following other regions: Louga, Diourbel and Fatick. And in the west, between the two coastlines, it borders on the Dakar region; the capital Dakar is 40 km from the border.

structure

The Thiès region is divided into three departments:

On the next structural levels, a city (Ville), divided into three urban districts (Communes d'arrondissement), further ten arrondissements, 14 municipalities (Communes) and 32 rural communities (Communautés rurales) are to be named for 2013, the latter in the context of a new level decentralization should also acquire the status of municipalities.
