The Fatick region with the capital Fatick is a coastal region in western Senegal . The region borders the Gambia in the south .

Geographical location

The Fatick region is elongated in western Senegal on the Atlantic coast known as the Petite-Côte and continues in the interior, angled in the shape of an elbow to the northeast. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west . In a clockwise direction, borders with the neighboring regions of Thies, Diourbel, Kaffrine and Kaolack follow from northwest to east. In the south lies the neighboring country of Gambia .

The largest rivers in the region are the Sine , on which the regional prefecture of Fatick is located, and the Saloum , whose broad lower course separates the north and south of the region. Form Sine and Saloum combined an extended, by the far inland reaching tidal current designed river delta , which occupies a width of 54 kilometer, the whole coastline of the region and by a widely branched system of Bolon the like Jinnak Bolon and mangrove forests amphibious shapes. In 2002, the Fatick region shrank to include the Taïf arrondissement in the extreme northeast, which moved to the Mbacké department of the Diourbel region with an area of ​​410 km² . According to the December 2002 census, the region covered an area of ​​7910 km² and had 615,558 inhabitants. At that time it was divided into 10 arrondissements, 7 municipalities (Communes) and 33 rural communities (Communautés rurales). In 2008, the northeastern Gossas department was downsized. The area around Guinguinéo was spun off from the Fatick region and as department Guinguinéo in the Kaolack region incorporated. According to the 2013 census, an area of ​​6685 km² and 714,389 inhabitants were documented for the reduced region.
