Foundiougne is a city in western Senegal . It is prefecture of the Foundiougne department in the Fatick region .

Geographical location

Foundiougne is located in the center of the Fatick region , 130 kilometers southeast of Dakar and 15 miles from the Fatick regional prefecture . Foundiougne is located on the south bank of the Saloum main arm opposite the confluence of the Sine on an approximately 42 km² island in the estuary delta, together with other places such as Mbam and Soum . The Saloum has reached a width of around 1400 meters at the height of the city under the wash-out influence of the tidal currents, 41 kilometers from the confluence with the Atlantic.

history

Foundiougne was founded as a port city by the French colonial administration in 1917, making it one of the oldest cities in the country. At that time it played an important role with its trading port and because of its strategic location on the Saloum. Most of the inhabitants came from the Serer ethnic group .

Foundiougne was one of the most important trading ports in French West Africa for shipping the peanut harvest to Europe at the beginning of the 20th century . When the main port was relocated further upstream to Kaolack after 1945, the city's economic power declined rapidly. The number of inhabitants fell from 80,000 to under 5000 at times.

Evidence of its former importance can still be found in the cityscape: shipyards and colonial buildings that are now used as hotels, town hall, prefecture, customs office and central market, among other things.

population

The last censuses showed the following population figures for the city:

year Residents
1988 ...
2002 4935
2013 6822

traffic

Foundiougne is not easily accessible due to its island location. A road connection leads to the southeast and crosses a tributary of the Saloum with a dam and bridge construction. In Passy, southwest of Kaolack, there is a connection to the national road N 5 .

The regional prefecture of Fatick can only be reached via a ferry that crosses five times a day to the north bank of the Saloum. The subsequent road leads through a largely amphibious area of the Sine-Saloum Delta. In Fatick there is a connection to the N 1 . Since 2014 there have been specific plans to build a bridge over the Saloum, which could significantly improve the economic development of the entire area around Foundiougne, not least because better accessibility would also increase the tourist attractiveness of the Sine Salum Delta.
