Fatick is a city in western Senegal . It is the capital of the Fatick region and the Fatick department .

Geographical location

Fatick lies in the peanut basin between M'bour and Kaolack on the western right bank of the Sine , which from here to its confluence with the Saloum is under the influence of the tides 13 kilometers south of the city. These washed out the meandering river bed and created an amphibious bank zone several hundred meters wide that was periodically flooded.

On the northern edge of Fatick, the national road N 1 , which leads from Dakar in the west to Tambacounda and on over the Malian border to Kayes , crosses the river bed of the Sine by means of a 400-meter-long combined dam and bridge construction. It is the last bridge before its mouth.

The three closest localities are Nerane, Pourham, Mbirk and Pourham Tok. After Dakar , capital of Senegal, there are 155 km.

population

The last censuses showed the following population figures for the city:

year Residents
1988 18,416
2002 23,149
2013 28,276

economy

Fatick used to live mainly from peanut production . For several years this has been on the decline, be it due to poor harvests, be it due to import barriers in the EU, or be it due to the complete privatization of the peanut industry in Senegal. Privatization in particular has created major problems, as the government no longer pays any subsidies. Therefore, the salt marshes are now the most important local industry.

Culture

There are several classified historical sites and monuments in the city, including the Maison Luthérienne and the service buildings of the Prefecture and the Tribunal.

Also to be mentioned are

  • Mind Ngo Mindiss , a place of sacrifice, especially for libations, located on the banks of the Sine River
  • Ndiobaye , a place for traditional ceremonies
  • Jab Ndeb , the sacred tree of Ndiaye-Ndiaye

Town twinning

Special relationships exist with Montoir-de-Bretagne ( Loire-Atlantique department , France ) within the "Club Sénégal" association of the René Guy Cadou school.
