Kayes is a city in western Mali with 148,053 inhabitants (2012 census) and the capital of the Kayes region .
It lies on the Senegal River and was the capital of the French Sudan colony for a few years from 1882 . Route nationale 1 leads from Bamako to the state of Senegal across the river ( Kayes Bridge ) in the city . The city lies on the Dakar – Niger railway line, which opened at the beginning of the 20th century . Kayes can also be reached by plane from Bamako, which is around 500 km away.
Kayes was a twin town of Magdeburg until the political change in the GDR . The mayor of Magdeburg, Werner Herzig, was made an honorary citizen of Kayes.
