Kayes Bridge

The bridge in the city of Kayes ( French Pont de Kayes ) in the west of the state of Mali is an important crossing over the Senegal River .

The bridge is a plate bridge with truss reinforcement made of steel and stands on several pillars made of concrete . It has a length of about 430 meters. The two-lane route nationale 1 (RN1), which leads from Bamako to Dakar in the state of Senegal , leads over the bridge. The bridge was built on the site of an existing ford . Since May 2016, 40-ton trucks are no longer allowed to use the dilapidated bridge and therefore have to drive through the old ford again. Long-distance truck traffic is recommended to bypass the bridge and to use the connection further south via Kita and Manantali instead of the RN1 .
