Cheick Diallo (born September 13, 1996 in Kayes ) is a Malian basketball player . He can play for both the power forward and center positions and is currently under contract with the Phoenix Suns in the NBA .
Career
Diallo grew up in Kayes , Mali, the youngest of six boys. He started playing basketball in 2010 . He left his home country in February 2012 and moved to the United States to pursue his dream of playing in the NBA . Although he did not speak English, he attended Our Savior New American School in Centereach , New York . After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Kansas to play for the Jayhawks . In his first season, he averaged three points and 2.5 rebounds in 27 games in the NCAA . Despite the lack of experience, he waived another college season and signed up for the 2016 NBA draft . On the day of the draft, June 23, 2016, he was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers in 33rd position, but switched to the New Orleans Pelicans on the same day . In the Summer League Diallo was able to draw attention to himself with 10.2 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game and the Pelicans finally signed him. After he was only used twice for a total of seven minutes in the first 23 games of the 2016/17 season , Diallo was allowed to play 31 minutes in the game against the Clippers on December 10, 2016, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. On April 12, 2017, he was able to convince with twelve points and 16 rebounds against the Portland Trail Blazers . In his rookie season, he also played for the Austin Spurs , Long Island Nets and the Greensboro Swarm in the NBA Development League .
On March 18, 2018, he scored 17 points against the Boston Celtics, his best of the 2017/18 season . In the following season 2018/19 he averaged six points in 64 games.
On July 17, Diallo signed a two-year contract with the Phoenix Suns .
