Kayes is an administrative region of Mali with 1,996,812 inhabitants. Its capital is the eponymous Kayes , other cities are Nioro du Sahel and Bafoulabé .
Ethnic groups in Kayes are the Khassonké , Malinke , Soninke and Fulbe .
geography
The Kayes region is located in western Mali, bordering Guinea , Senegal and Mauritania . The climate changes from a relatively humid climate in the south via Sudanese conditions to the Sahel zone in the north.
At Bafoulabé, the rivers Bafing and Bakoyé merge to form Senegal .
history
At the beginning of the 19th century, the kingdom of Khasso was located here .
In 1892 the city of Kayes became the capital of the French Sudan colony .
