Gao is an administrative region of Mali with around 544,120 inhabitants. Their capital is the Gao of the same name .

The Gao region is located in eastern Mali, bordering the Niger , and is divided into the four districts ( cercles ) Ansongo , Bourem , Gao and Ménaka . The Niger River flows through the region.

Ethnic groups in the region are the Songhai , Bozo , Tuareg , Bambara and Kounta . The city of Gao was the center of the Gao Empire and the Songha Empire .
