The Rufisque department with the capital Rufisque is one of 45 departments that make up Senegal and one of four departments that make up the metropolitan region of Dakar . It is a coastal department in the west of Senegal between the Grande-Côte in the north and the Petite-Côte in the south.

The department has an area of ​​371.8 km². The subdivision of the department has changed several times over the years. In 2002 the division into the arrondissements Rufisque and Sangalkam, the cities of Ville de Rufisque, Bargny, Sébikotane and Diamniadio as well as the two communautés rurales Sangalkam and Yéne still applied. The city of Ville de Rufisque has been divided into three communes d'arrondissement since 1996 .
