Dakar is a region in the west of Senegal , it is located on the Cap-Vert peninsula and is therefore the westernmost point of continental Africa . The capital of the region is the city of the same name, Dakar , which is also the capital of Senegal. The Dakar region with 550 km² is the smallest and with over three million inhabitants at the same time the most populous region in Senegal and is considered the metropolitan region of the country due to its high degree of urbanization .
The Dakar region is divided into four departments: Dakar , Guédiawaye , Pikine and Rufisque , with the first three departments each consisting of just one major city: Ville de Dakar, Ville de Guédiawaye and Ville de Pikine . In the Rufisque department, too, around three quarters of the inhabitants live in urban areas, almost half in the city of Ville de Rufisque alone .
