Sébikotane is a city in the Rufisque department of the Dakar metropolitan area , located in the central west of Senegal . The spelling of the name is not entirely uniform in official use, but the spelling Sébikotane clearly outweighs the spelling Sébikhotane .

Geographical location

Sébikotane is located around twelve kilometers east of the Rufisque regional prefecture on the border with the Thiès region in the fertile wetlands of the Grand Niayes , which stretch along the Grande-Côte from the Cap-Vert peninsula to the Senegal estuary at Saint-Louis , against the salty sea air Protected by a chain of coastal dunes and ideally suited for horticulture .

history

The place Sébikotane was founded in 1736 by the Serer ethnic group . In 1886 the place received a station on the Dakar – Niger railway line, which resulted in a strong economic and population boom. The residential districts Sébi-Gare, Keury Kao, Ndiola and Sébi Escale were newly built. In 1911 the Catholic Grand séminaire François Libermann was established , as well as a convent of the Carmelites .

Last but not least, Sébikotane was the seat of the École normal William Ponty from 1938 to 1965 , which trained a whole generation of Francophone black African executives from all over French West Africa . The Sébi Ponty district in the west of the city keeps the memory of this school with its name. The Université du Futur africain was supposed to be built on the former school grounds in the 1990s, but after the failure of these plans it was converted into a prison (Maison de correction de Sébi Ponty).

Sébikotane was the seat of a communauté rurale from 1984 and received the legal status of a commune (city) in 1996 .

Sébikotane is on the N 2 national road . It connects the metropolitan region of Dakar with the cities of Thiès, Tivaouane , Kébémer , Louga , Saint-Louis , Richard Toll , Dagana , Ourossogui and finally Kidira on the in a large arc, initially following the Grande Côte at some distance and then following the left bank of Senegal Malian border.

Between Diamniadio and Sébikotane there is a junction of the toll Autoroute 1 to the N2.
