The historic French trading post
|
Dagana is one of the northernmost cities in Senegal . It is prefecture of the Dagana department in the Saint-Louis region .
Geographical location
Dagana is located in the north of the Saint-Louis region , 120 kilometers from the regional prefecture of Saint-Louis . The city is located on the left bank of the Senegal Current, which meanders to the west . Before the Diama Dam was built , the influence of the tides made itself felt through the regular rise and fall of the water level in the river. The populated urban area extends essentially between the river bank and the national road N 2, which passes two kilometers south of it . An intensely agricultural river oasis stretches to the west and east of the city .
history
French colonial rule has left structural traces in Dagana, as well as in the downstream towns of Saint-Louis and Richard Toll and further upstream in Podor , Matam and Bakel . In Dagana, the French have built a fort and an office for their trading company.
population
The last censuses showed the following population figures for the city:
year | Residents |
---|---|
1988 | 15,638 |
2002 | 18.205 |
2013 | 21,750 |
traffic
The national road N2 connects Dagana with all cities in the river regions from Saint-Louis in the west to Kidira in the east of the country.
Dagana, as a departmental prefecture, is also connected to the national air transport network via the Richard Toll airfield located 18 kilometers west of the city .
From October to May, the river cruise ship Bou el Mogdad operates fortnightly on Senegal between Saint-Louis and Podor and also makes a stop in Dagana.
