Bakel is a city in eastern Senegal . It is prefecture of the Bakel department in the Tambacounda region . The place is known from the former French Fort Faidherbe .
Geographical location
Bakel is located in the extreme northeast of the Tambacounda region , 181 kilometers from the Tambacounda regional prefecture . Bakel is located on the left western bank of Senegal , 28 kilometers downstream of the triangle with the confluence of the Falémé , where Senegal on the left bank and Mauritania on the right bank meet with Mali . The city is surrounded by hills. South of the city, they come close to the river banks on both sides and tower over 60 meters high, while Senegal flows about 10 meters above sea level. In the middle of Bakel, Fort Faidherbe rises above the river.

The national road N 2 , which follows the left bank of the Senegal River from Saint-Louis up to Kidira am Falémé at some distance , passes close to Bakel. The city has a ferry connection with the Mauritanian town of Gouray via Senegal, which is 130 meters wide. Bakel Airport is located on the N2, seven kilometers south of the city .
