Booba
Booba (born December 9, 1976 in Sèvres , Hauts-de-Seine ; real name Elie Yaffa ) is a French rapper . He is one of the most successful French rappers, his style is derived from Afro-American gangsta and hardcore rap. He is also the founder and head of his own fashion brand Ünkut and the Tallac Records label . Booba now lives in Miami .
biography
Booba was born the son of a Senegalese and a French housekeeper . He grew up in the Parisian banlieue , first in Meudon- la-Forêt, later in Boulogne-Billancourt . Booba first went to his father's homeland at the age of ten. He also saw the island of Gorée , which, according to his own statement, had a strong influence on him and was later used repeatedly in his texts (e.g. "Et j'ai pleuré dès que j'ai touché l'île de Gorée" ( Booba : Maman there) or "A 10 ans, j'ai vu Gorée depuis mes larmes sont éternelles" ( Booba : 0.9)).
In 1992 Booba moved to Detroit , USA, to live with a host family for a year , where he attended school and improved his English. Two years later, back in France, Booba appeared for the first time on a recording: on the album Tout le monde dans la ronde by Les sages poètes de la rue he is represented with a stanza. He also appeared on the cut killer mix tape together with his rap partner Ali .
The following year, 1995, he recorded his first album with Ali, but it was never released. According to rumors, the project had the working title Sortis de l'ombre ; an idea that was later at least partially reused with the song Hommes de l'ombre with Ali and Mala. A title from this period was later published for the first time on Booba's Autopsy Volume 1 mixtape.
The success of the duo as Lunatic increased rapidly than 1996 valid as groundbreaking song Le Crime paie on the Hostile hip hop - Compilation appeared. First appearances followed together with the Time Bomb collective . Booba himself was sentenced to three years imprisonment in 1997 for robbing a taxi, during which he wrote the song La lettre , which was later published on Mauvais Œil . Shortly after his release, the rapper collective 92I was founded , which, in addition to Booba himself, consists of some rapper friends from the eponymous department of Hauts-de-Seine , which has the serial number 92.
In 2000, Booba and the rappers Rohff from Mafia K'1 Fry and Rim'K from 113 / Mafia K'1 Fry recorded a song together, but it never appeared. Booba's first long player was released in October of the same year: together with Ali, he produced the album Mauvais Œil , which received a gold record in France as an independent release . In 2002 he released his debut album Temps Mort on his previous label 45 Scientific , which sold over 100,000 copies. Only a few months later, on April 13, 2002, Booba was charged with a shooting at the Aubervillierser Club Jean-Luc Lahaie , but the case was dropped at the end of the year. At the same time, the French literary magazine Nouvelle Revue Française published an article on Booba comparing him with previous poets. A year later, in 2003, Booba left his label 45 Scientific and at the same time his partner Ali, with whom he had formed the duo Lunatic to date .
In 2004 Booba founded the fashion brand Ünkut . It is a mix of Afro-American Flat & X-large fashion and elegant, classic European clothing style. According to Booba, the concept is to create a symbiosis of streetwear and luxury .
On a musical level, the release of his solo album Panthéon followed . He sold this through his newly founded sub-label Tallac Records at Barclay / Universal Music ; it has sold over 245,000 times. In August 2004 Booba appeared in the opening act for the American rapper 50 Cent , with whom he later recorded an unreleased song. In addition, at a concert in Paris, Nas dedicated three songs to him using beats by Booba ( Tems mort , N ° 10 and Repose en paix ).
In 2005 Booba shot a music video with Tony Parker in San Antonio for the joint song Top of the Game , which also featured the American rapper Fabolous . In addition to increasing popularity, the title also earned him a lot of criticism from France, which accused him of sellout . In the following time Booba also appeared more and more in America, so he met the singer Ryan Leslie and had a photo shoot with the singer and model Cassie .
Also in 2005, 152 MPs and 49 senators called on the French Ministry of Justice to initiate the prosecution and surveillance of several French rap groups, including Lunatic . The accusation is the call for racism and sedition against the French state and administrative apparatus. One of the triggers is the line of text “Quand j'vois la France les jambes écartées, j'l'encule sans huile” ( Booba : La Bitume avec une Plume), in which Booba metaphorically compared France with a slut .
On January 8, 2006 Booba organized the hip-hop event Ünkut Contest in Paris with raps, basketball games, breakdance performances and Booba’s performance in which he presented his new album Ouest Side . This was released on February 13th and sold over 300,000 copies, making it Booba's most successful album to date. It was awarded three platinum records and topped the French charts for the first time in Booba's career. Shortly before Boobas mother and brother were of unknowns from their home in Meudon kidnapped . The case came public when Booba turned to the police. Despite ransom demands in the amount of 500,000 euros and two albums by the artist, both were released without paying any money, whereupon the rumor arose that it was only an advertisement for the album Ouest Side . At the same time, his former label 45 Scientific released a Black Album with a collection of unreleased tracks from their time together without Booba's consent .
On November 3, 2006, Booba performed at the French Star Academy . As the first hip-hop artist on the show, he rapped his song Au bout des rêves with the Star Academy singer Cynthia , which again earned him strong criticism.
At the beginning of next year, Booba decided to move to London temporarily . In February, Booba's first appearance at the Zenith concert hall in Paris followed . In addition, Booba recorded the title Hands up high together with 50 Cent , which was to be published on the European edition of 50 Cents album Curtis , but ultimately never appeared and only circulated on the Internet .
Just one year after moving to London, Booba moved again in 2008 and went to Miami , USA, where he still lives today.
Booba caused a scandal in November 2008 during an appearance at the rap festival Urban Peace 2 . During his first song he was pelted with various objects from the audience, whistled and insulted, whereupon he threw a full bottle of Jack Daniel’s in the direction of the group in question into the trench between the stage and the audience and then broke off his performance. A few weeks later, on November 24, 2008, he released his fourth solo album 0.9 , which, despite receiving another gold award, was very critically rated by the French audience.
In May 2009 Booba's label Tallac Records released the work of another artist for the first time: The debut album Himalaya by Booba's longtime companion Mala, on which Booba is also represented several times. A few months later, Booba's Mixtape Autopsy Volume 3 followed , on which various Booba's songs for albums by other artists, but also new, exclusive titles and songs by other French rappers, which Booba would like to introduce to a broad audience, according to some statements. Among them are the rappers Despo Rutti, Seth Gueko and Dosseh.
On November 22, 2010, Booba released his fifth studio album Lunatic , the title of which is based on the joint crew with Ali. It has sold over 150,000 times.
One of the greatest successes in Booba's career was his appearance at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in October 2011 , which was sold out. It was the first concert by a French rapper on a comparable scale. One month later the mixtape Autopsy 4 followed , which takes up the concept of the previous mixtapes, but this time only contains exclusive titles. Some other French rappers like Kaaris, Niro, Djé or Grödash are invited again.
On November 26, 2012, Booba's sixth studio album, Futur , was released, on which the American rap heavyweights 2 Chainz and Rick Ross were represented. A re-release followed in 2013 with Futur 2.0 .
In 2014 the single La mort leur va si bien was released as the soundtrack for the mini-film of the same name by Chris Macari . The singles OKLM and 3G were also released . 3G was produced by the German producer X-plosive , with whom he already worked on Lunatic in 2010 . The album DUC has been announced for 2015 . From this, the song Caracas was released as a promo single at the end of 2014 . In addition, a music video for the song Vrai with 40,000 speed was released.
Controversy
French rapper MC Jean Gab'1 attacked Booba on his track J't'emmerde , accusing him of never really having problems in his youth. Booba responded with the following statement: “It's enough to watch the news. Sure, we don't have an Iraq war here, but there is another form of oppression, from the state, society, and people in everyday life. As a black person in France, you often get the feeling that you are not welcome, no matter what neighborhood you live in. People like me have to bring in two or three or four times as much to make it through. But well, I'm not starting to cry about it right now. "
At the beginning of 2007 there was a dispute between Booba and the French rapper Sinik . Booba accuses him and other French rappers on the track Le DUC of his mixtape Autopsy Volume 2 that black artists are outclassed in relation to white artists. Sinik replied with L'homme a abattre , whereupon Booba countered again with Carton rose . Sinik wanted to draw a line with one last track, Tant que tu parles je réponds , but it was never published.
style
Rhyming style
Booba is part of the French Nouvelle École (New School), which mixes elements of Afro-American rap and hip hop with local music styles. France is a specialty because the local scene is also influenced by North African music.
Booba uses various anglicisms and slang from the Afro-American scene. Furthermore, his rhyming style is acoustically characterized by the frequent repetitions of word syllables:
Ouais Ouais, Si Si
Tout le monde s'écarte, je dé-dé-débarque /
9.2 dramatique barque, j'distritribue des -des baffes /
Contrôle d'identité montre-montre nous tes fafs /
Time à la chatte à ta grand mère la la gross biatch / (excerpt from 92 Izi from the album Ouest Side )
