Damso, 2018

Damso (born May 10, 1992 in Kinshasa ; actually William Kalubi ) is a Belgian - Congolese rapper, singer and songwriter.

Life

William Kalubi was born in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he grew up until he was nine years old. At nine, his family fled to Europe during the Second Congo War and settled in Belgium. He found the center of his life in the Brussels suburb of Matongé . In his youth he learned to play the guitar, his older siblings played rap for him. When he was 13 he started rapping himself. His biggest influence became 2Pac . At the age of 14 he made his first appearances on local stages. Together with his friend Dolfa he founded the collective OPG, which soon included other rappers.

After graduating from school, he first studied marketing and psychology , but dropped out in favor of his musical career. This angered his parents, who gave him no support.

In 2014 his first mixtape La salle d'attente was released as a free download and via Soundcloud . The crew mix tape MMMXIII followed on September 24, 2014 . In 2015 he released his track Poséidon on a mixtape by French rapper Booba , which ultimately led to his breakthrough. He toured with Booba and Gato da Bato and signed him to Universal Records . His debut album Batterie faible followed in 2016 and became a top ten hit in France.

Ipséité followed in 2017, reaching number 1 in the French and Belgian (Wallonia) charts. Lithopédion followed in 2018 , which also reached number 1 in the Belgian and French and for the first time also in the Swiss charts.

controversy

Originally, his song Humains was supposed to be used as the official anthem for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but the Belgian Women's Council and some sponsors, including Coca-Cola , Proximus and Adidas , protested because the rapper wrote “contempt for women, Abuse and violent fantasies [...] to an extent that, frankly, is astonishing “would display. Universal Records and the rapper did not comment on the allegations. The Belgian national team then went to Russia without an official anthem.
