Matam is a city in northeast Senegal . It is the capital of the Matam region and the Matam department .
Geographical location
Matam is located on the left western bank of Senegal , which forms the border with Mauritania here. Matam is the only major city on the river in the section of the river between Bakel and Dagana , where the main stream meanders through the ten to 20 kilometer wide alluvial plain so far to the left high bank that the city can be reached by land without bridges. Upstream the Dioulol and downstream the Diamel and Doué are upstream of the main stream as side arms .
Ourossogui , the closest town of the same size, is located in the southwest and is 8 km away. It is around 460 km to the capital Dakar .

Matam is the end point of the N 3 national road , which leads from Dakar in the west via Diourbel and Touba to the Mauritanian border. In the nearby Ourossogui the N3 crossing N2 , which at some distance the left bank of the Senegal River from Saint-Louis up to Kidira follows, the main border crossing into Mali . Matam Airport is on the N3, on the southwestern outskirts of Ourossogui, and ten kilometers from Matam .
