Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Punin ( Russian: Николай Николаевич Пунин ; scientific transliteration Nikolaj Nikolaevič Punin ; born on November 16, 1888 in Helsingfors (Helsinki), Grand Duchy of Finland , Russian Empire ; died on August 21, 1953 in Abes, Vorkuta labor camp. , Inta , Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Komi (ASSR Komi, Soviet Union ) was a Russian art historian and writer .

From 1926 to 1938, Punin lived with the famous Russian poet Anna Akhmatova (1889–1966). Since 1918 he was one of the organizers of the system of art education and museum work in the USSR. He is the author of various works on the history of Russian art. He is one of the victims of the Stalinist purges .

Live and act

After Punin's arrest, his former partner Anna Akhmatova left his coat in its place as a memento. The coat is still there; the Anna Akhmatova Museum is now in the house in St. Petersburg .

Nikolai Punin was born on November 16, 1888 in Helsingfors (Helsinki), Grand Duchy of Finland . His father was Nikolai Mikhailovich Punin (1856–1920), a military doctor, his mother was Anna N. Punin (1865–1898). After attending the high school in Tsarskoe Selo , he studied from 1907 to 1914 at the St. Petersburg University . In 1917 he married Anna E. Arens (Galia, 1892–1943), a doctor. After the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, he published the magazines Iskusstwo kommuny (Искусство коммуны Art of the Commune , together with Ossip Brik and Natan Altman ) and Isobrasitelnoje iskusstwo (изобразительное искотельное искустовое искустельное искостовое art . From 1918 to 1819 Punin was commissioner of the Hermitage and the Russian Museum and from 1930 to 1946 professor at the Academy of Arts and at the State University of Petrograd / Leningrad (St. Petersburg). He was the right hand of the People's Commissar for Education Anatoly Lunacharsky (1875-1933) and the head of the Petrograd branch of the Fine Arts Department of the People's Commissariat for Education (abbr. Narkompros). He worked in the Russian Museum from 1913 to 1938. He organized various important exhibitions on Russian art, including the most important: RSFSR artists during the last 15 years in Leningrad (1932) and Moscow (1933). He was repeatedly captured by the Soviet secret police. Punin was deported to the Gulag ( Vorkuta labor camp ) in 1949 after he had described a large number of the portraits of Lenin found all over the country as having no artistic taste. The art historian Vsevolod Petrov (1912–1978), his close collaborator, was fired in the course of a Stalinist campaign. Nikolai Punin died near Vorkuta and was buried in a grave marked only with a number. He was posthumously rehabilitated . The diaries of Nikolai Punin 1904-1953 , mostly from the years 1915 to 1936, published in English translation at the University of Texas Press (1999).
