Life

The exact date of his birth is not known; 1360 is presumed to be the date of birth, because in the vitae of Rublev's death it is noted that he died of old age, old age meant older than 60. Since Rublev died in 1430, it could be assumed that he was born in 1360, if the character of his art does not have to be taken into account, which in terms of style suggests the 90s of the 14th century. That would mean considering the 70s as the date of birth.

Andrei Rublev presumably took the monastic vows before 1405 and assumed the name Andrei. He lived in the Savior Andronnikov Monastery in a community of Moscow painters.

The composition of the icon shows the scene from the Bible in which three angels visit Sarah and Abraham ( Genesis 18.1–33  EU ). Rublev concentrates on the representation of the three figures. The interpretation of the work is complex. It will u. a. interpreted as an appeal to unity during a period of conflict among the princes. Rublev consciously depicts the Trinity as a unity without clearly differentiating between God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
