Henri Jozef Machiel Nouwen (born January 24, 1932 in Nijkerk , † September 21, 1996 in Hilversum ) was a Dutch priest , psychologist and spiritual writer.

Life

Nouwen's father was the lawyer Laurent Nouwen, his mother's name was Maria Ramselaar. Nouwen's Abitur in The Hague in 1950 was followed in 1951 by studying theology and philosophy at the seminary in Rijsenburg near Utrecht . In 1957 he was ordained a priest there .

From 1957 to 1964 Nouwen studied psychology at the Catholic Radboud University in Nijmegen , then from 1964 to 1966 at the Menninger Clinic, a pastoral psychological institute in Topeka , Kansas. From January 1966 to 1968 he was a visiting professor in psychology at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

After returning to the Netherlands, Nouwen worked at the Pastoral Institute in Amsterdam and received his doctorate in theology from the Nijmegen faculty . Between 1968 and 1970 he taught pastoral psychology and spirituality in Utrecht . From 1971 to 1981 he researched and taught primarily at Yale University in New Haven in the fields of mysticism , spirituality, practical pastoral care and pastoral psychology.

In 1974 Nouwen retired to the Trappist Genesee Abbey for seven months . He reported on the impressions gained during this time in the book I listened to the silence .

In 1978 Nouwen was a visiting professor at the Pontifical North America College in Rome for five months . In 1981 Nouwen left Yale University to spend six months in Latin America to learn about life with the poor. He also wanted to get in touch with Gustavo Gutiérrez , the co-founder and namesake of liberation theology . In 1983 he followed the call of Harvard University and taught theology at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge .

In 1985, Nouwen received the Thomas Merton Award for Peace and Social Justice. He gained new impressions in 1983 when he visited the Ark of the Canadian Jean Vanier , founded in 1964 , a community of people with and without disabilities in France. This experience prompted him to leave Harvard University in the summer of 1985 and live in the Ark in Trosly-Breuil for a year . In mid-1986 he visited the house of the late French mystic Marthe Robin in Châteauneuf-de-Galaure in the Drôme department . In late 1986 he found a permanent home in the Daybreak Ark community in Richmond Hill near Toronto , Canada, where he served as spiritual director until his unexpected death in 1996.

In 1996, Nouwen traveled to St. Petersburg to make a film about Rembrandt's painting The Return of the Prodigal Son . During a stopover in the Netherlands, he died of a heart attack in Hilversum.

reception

After his death, a society, a foundation in Rotterdam and an archive and research center at the University of Toronto were set up to further research and publish his extensive work.

Works

Nouwen is an internationally recognized writer of spiritual literature. In his more than 40 books, he knew how to combine technical knowledge with Christian spirituality. His books live not least from the perception and reflection of one's own spiritual experiences and the existential decisions derived from them. Individual unpublished texts - especially diaries - were still published after his death, although it remains unclear whether they were all intended for publication. Many of his works have had numerous editions and have been translated into several languages, in German have appeared:
