Life

Peter Dyckhoff was born in Rheine in 1937 to Rudolf and Marie-Charlotte Dyckhoff. His parents founded a thread weaving mill in 1948, which later became the Dyckhoff Frottier GmbH (Rheine), which still exists today. After graduating from high school, Peter Dyckhoff started at the Jesuit College of St. Georgen in Frankfurt a. M. started studying Catholic theology until he was in a coma for weeks after falling. Now he completed a degree in psychology . When his father was killed in a car accident in 1964, Peter Dyckhoff took over the management of his parents' company with around 250 employees at the age of 28. He held out this activity for twelve years, whereby the compulsion to succeed in his job made him dependent on alcohol and drugs. In his search for a remedy, he also came across Transcendental Meditation , which however did not satisfy him. A pastor finally led Dyckhoff to inner prayer and thus back to the church. Peter Dyckhoff handed over the management of the company to a salaried managing director and at the age of 40 began again to study theology at the universities of Münster , Innsbruck and Brixen , where he was ordained a priest in 1981 . In 1982 he became a pilgrimage and hospital chaplain in the Lower Rhine Marian pilgrimage site in Kevelaer . Afterwards Peter Dyckhoff came to the diocese of Hildesheim as parish priest , where in 1989 he took over the construction and management of the episcopal educational institution "Haus Cassian" in Rohdental in the Weser Uplands . He then returned to his home diocese of Münster in 1999 and has since devoted himself to various pastoral tasks. Dyckhoff was shaped by his longtime spiritual companion Johannes Bours .

Peter Dyckhoff received his doctorate in theology (in the subject dogmatics ) in 2006 on the subject of “Prayer as the source of life. Systematic-theological investigation of the prayer at rest , based on Johannes Cassian ”. He had found himself unable to accept an honorary doctorate from the Vallendar Theological College without having written a scientific paper.

As the author of several books and numerous publications on Christian prayer, meditation and retreat practice, he passes on his experience as a leader of retreat courses to his readers. In addition, Dyckhoff is active as a speaker and retreat leader in numerous educational institutions.

Dyckhoff is considered the most important spiritual companion for the quiet prayer and an expert on the spirituality of Johannes Cassian. In 2013 he founded the Foundation for Prayer of Rest in order to make the prayer of rest in the sense of Cassian better known and to promote it through courses and the training of course leaders.
