Genesee Trappist Abbey

The Trappist Genesee Abbey (Latin Abbatia Beatae Mariae de Genesse ; English Abbey of the Genesse ) has been an American monastery in Piffard, Livingston County (New York) , Diocese of Rochester , since 1952 .

history

The Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani founded the subsidiary Our Lady of the Genesee Abbey in 1952 (south of Rochester ) in the valley of the Genesee River , which was elevated to an abbey in 1953 . In 1974, Henri JM Nouwen, a friend of Abbot John Eudes Bamberger, spent seven months in the monastery and wrote a book about it that was translated into numerous languages.
