Diourbel [ djurˈbɛl ] - Jurbel in Wolof -Idiom - is a city in western Senegal , 150 kilometers from the capital Dakar , east of Thiès . It is the capital of the Diourbel region and the Diourbel department .
The main source of income for the population is local peanut cultivation. The desertification of the increasingly arid environment has recently led to rural exodus and severe impoverishment , which was measurable as malnutrition among small children and is even more evident in the neighboring town of Touba , a founding of the Muridiyya .
Several parties and political associations have their headquarters in Diourbel: the Mouvement des citoyens pour une démocratie de développement , the Mouvement national des serviteurs des masses and the Parti populaire sénégalais .
