history

Headquarters of the Ministry of Popular Education , 1969

The building was built between 1963 and 1965 according to plans by Manfred Hörner, Hannelore Köhler and Eberhard Mueller as the seat of the GDR Ministry for Popular Education . The building with its sober grid facade was one of the first attempts in the GDR to use prefabricated assembly elements . It was partially covered with plates made of Meissen ceramics .

After German reunification, the architectural firm Gehrmann Consult & Partner anxious 1993-1994 a complete refurbishment , in the old building only the reinforced concrete - skeletal structure remained intact. Subtle neoclassical style elements were used in the exterior design of the building, which is now clad with Schönbrunn sandstone . Inside the house offers space for offices of members of the Bundestag, on the ground floor there is a row of shops.

On March 23, 2017, Norbert Lammert , President of the Bundestag, announced that the Council of Elders had decided to rename the building, which had been named after its address at Unter den Linden 71 , to "Matthias-Erzberger-Haus". This was in recognition of the achievements of the center politician who took it upon himself to sign the Compiègne armistice in 1918 and who had to pay for this sense of duty with his life in 1921 as a victim of a right-wing terrorist murder.
