The Senegal with its catchment area; the Diama Dam near the coast

The Diama Dam is a barrier that was completed in 1986 in the lower reaches of the Senegal River (West Africa). It spans the border between the states of Senegal and Mauritania , which is formed by the river. The construction was a project of the organization pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal (OMVS)

tasks

The dam protects the interior against salinization . The sea previously penetrated up to 250 kilometers and made the affected parts of Senegal and Mauritania uncultivable. In addition, the dam allows two annual harvests. It maintains the water level of Lake Guiers (Senegal) and Lake R'kiz (Mauritania) and makes the river navigable. Since 2013 he has also been helping to secure the drinking water supply for the capital Nouakchott in Mauritania through a new pipeline .

description

Claude Bourdon designed the dam . Construction began on September 12, 1981.

It is an embankment embankment with a movable weir. It has a height of 18 meters and a crown length of 610 meters, of which 440 meters are accounted for by the northern side dam. The dam has a movable barrier structure . When the tide is low , the dam closes to prevent salt water from flowing in. When Senegal floods, it is open to allow normal water flow. The overflow capacity is 6500 m³ / s. The reservoir has a surface of 235 square kilometers. There is a lock for shipping in the dam . The lock chamber is 175 meters long and 13 meters wide.

An international road runs over the dam, connecting St. Louis in Senegal with Nouakchott in Mauritania.

The construction was financed by a loan from the African Development Bank of US $ 149.5 million.

Ecological consequences

The ecological balance was disturbed by the construction of the dam. With the help of an elaborate lock system, areas below the dam, which were largely cut off from fresh water after completion, could also be renatured.
