Lake Guiers ( Lac de Guiers in French ), the largest in the country, is located in northern Senegal , south of the cities of Richard Toll and Rosso (Senegal) . It is important for the water supply of the capital Dakar , which is connected to the lake by underground pipes.
geography
The Lac de Guiers is about 35 kilometers long and eight kilometers wide and is fed by the Ferlo , which comes from the south-east and reaches the lake from the south. The lake was connected to Senegal in the north by the Portuguese River , until it was replaced by a straight channel to Richard Toll. With a width of 40 meters, this is 16.6 kilometers long and, depending on the season and the water level in the river, either allows the lake water to flow north or the floods of Senegal to flow south into the lake. The shores of the lake, which is shallow with an average depth of 1.3 m, are mostly fertile. Extensive sugar cane fields, which are irrigated with the water of the lake, have been planted along and around the northern bank in particular .
history
The lake has an eventful history and was part of the Tekrur , Waalo and Jolof kingdoms . On the west bank, Nder, which still exists as a settlement, was the third and final capital of the Waalo Empire. The lake used to be called Lac du Panier Foule or Pania Fuli after the Fulbe people .
