Jolof
Jolof was an empire in West Africa on the territory of what is now Senegal .
description
The kingdom of Jolof, also written as Dyolof or Wolof, was founded by the Wolof ethnic group who still live in the region today. The capital was Linguère , about 245 kilometers northeast of today's Senegalese capital Dakar . Little is known about the early period today except that it traded directly with the Empire of Mali or was a vassal state of Mali.
The Jolof Empire peaked in the early 16th century when it traded profitably with the Portuguese . In 1549 the western province of Cayor (also Kajoor, Kaylor or Caylor) declared itself an independent empire and in 1555 Bawol also split off. In 1890 Jolof was conquered by France and incorporated into the colony of Senegal.
