Tivaouane is a city in the central west of Senegal . It is prefecture of the Tivaouane department in the Thiès region .

Religious meaning

Tivaouane is the stronghold of Tijaniyyah Malikiyah, a branch of the Order of Tijaniyyah representing the most numerous Islamic community in Senegal. The place is the seat of the head of this order, who calls himself the Khalife général des Tidianes , and with the tomb of Malik Sy , the founder of this branch, is also one of the most important Senegalese pilgrimage sites.

Every year two large festivals take place in Tivaouane, for which the followers of the order come together: 1. the birthday festival ( Maouloud ) of the prophet Mohammed on the 12th Rabīʿ al-awwal , which is also called Gàmmu in the Wolof idiom ; 2. The Ziyāra (Wolof: Siyaare ) on the 10th Muharram , the Ashura day, which is called Tamxarit in Senegal . At these festivals, the devotees bring gifts to the leaders of the order and, conversely, hope to preserve the baraka (blessing power) of the place in this way . The city's religious importance also explains its rapid population growth. In 1960 it only had 7900 inhabitants.

history

Tivaouane was part of the territory of the Wolof tribe in the Kingdom of the Cayor and was even its capital at times. This city has been known in Europe since the 15th century. It was researched by the Venetian explorer Luigi Cada-Mosto . In 1904 it was the fifth largest city in Senegal after Saint-Louis , Dakar , Rufisque and Gorée .

In 2003 the list of Senegalese Historical Monuments was added to the Mausoleum of El-Hadji Malick Sy , the Great Mosque of Serigne Babacar Sy and the railway station.
