Niayes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Niayes are as zone of Niayes an important, albeit small, ökogeographischer natural area in the West African state of Senegal .

The Zone des Niayes is a wetland around 150 kilometers long and 5 to 10 kilometers wide along the Grande-Côte between Cap Vert and the estuary delta of the Senegal River . The Niayes are made up of a series of depressions that have formed between the coastal and hinterland dunes. They have near-surface groundwater supplies and are the most important vegetable growing area in Senegal. They are densely populated, especially in the Arrondissement des Niayes in the metropolis of Pikine . In the Niayes, more than 20% of Senegal's population live on less than 1% of the territory. To the east of the Niayes is the ecological geographic natural area of the peanut basin .

The size of the Zone des Niayes is 2759 km². Administratively, the Niayes extend over the coastal parts of the regions of Saint-Louis , Louga , Thiès and Dakar .

The economically successful use of the Niayes depends on good transport routes to the Dakar metropolitan region. The 100-kilometer Route des Niayes , classified as a regional road , is particularly useful for this purpose , which is linked to Autoroute 1 and the N 1 at Rufisque and as the R10, then as the R70 and R70 bis, via Sangalkam and the coastal town of Kayar leads past Mboro and ends at Lompoul-sur-Mer ( near Kébémer ). Starting from the towns of Diamniadio , Sébikotane and Pout , the N 2 connects the Niayes a little inland and, parallel to them, the towns of Thiès , Tivaouane , Mékhé , Kébémer, Louga and Saint-Louis .
