Gesundheitsinformation.de

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gesundheitsinformation.de is a German online health portal that offers laypeople evidence-based information on common diseases, diagnoses and health issues.

Content

Gesundheitsinformation.de is intended to help sick people and other interested parties to understand the advantages and disadvantages of important treatment options and health care offers. The information can support, but not replace, discussions with doctors and other specialists.

The topics dealt with on Gesundheitsinformation.de are grouped into topics such as reproduction and childbirth, women's health, cardiovascular system, cancer, men's health, but also evidence-based medicine or the early evaluation of drugs.

The individual topics are subdivided into an overview, more detailed information ("More knowledge", "What studies say") and experience reports: The overview introduces the topic and clarifies, for example, risk factors, consequences, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and that in the case of an illness Living with the disease. “More knowledge” provides more detailed information about individual aspects such as drug treatment of a disease or certain diagnostic procedures. Texts from the category “What studies say” are brief summaries of the current state of knowledge on a research question formulated in the title. In the field reports, people who have had experience with a disease or a medical measure have their say.

The website also includes explanations of body functions or treatments and examinations, a glossary of medical-scientific terms and interactive applications such as quizzes, films and decision-making aids. These are intended to promote general medical understanding and help to better understand diseases. Brochures on all topics can be downloaded, and on request they can also be ordered as flyers.

All content is also available on the English-language sister portal informedhealth.org.

organization

Gesundheitsinformation.de is a website of the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) , whose legal mandate is to educate the public on health issues. The institute, founded in 2004, is a professionally independent scientific institution of the non-profit foundation for quality and efficiency in health care, which pursues the goal of supporting evidence-based decisions on health issues.

history

The basic concept of Gesundheitsinformation.de was developed in 2005. In February 2006 the website was activated for the public. In May 2006, the British sister site informedhealthonline.org was launched, which was renamed “Informed Health” in 2015.

Choice of topics and quality assurance

Information is primarily compiled on a catalog of topics compiled by IQWiG in 2012, which in particular includes common diseases, diagnoses and health issues.

In addition, the main results of many IQWiG reports are prepared in a generally understandable manner for Gesundheitsinformation.de, for example for the early benefit assessment of drugs. The Federal Joint Committee or the Federal Ministry of Health can also arrange for certain topics to be dealt with. Users can suggest topics and content using the contact form.

Before publication, the draft texts are sent to various committees, patient representatives and the IQWiG Foundation Board for comments. In addition, the editors let users evaluate the texts in advance. The feedback is then incorporated into the revision of the texts.

The information is updated after three years at the latest.

The portal was checked by the BIK advice center in Hamburg according to the barrier-free information technology ordinance and found to be “very accessible” with 95.5 out of 100 points. It is certified according to the HONcode , a standard for health information on the Internet.

financing

The use of Gesundheitsinformation.de is free of charge. Like the entire IQWiG, the website is financed from surcharges for inpatient and outpatient medical treatments, i.e. ultimately from contributions from all members of the statutory health insurance (GKV) . Healthinformation.de does not generate any income from advertising or similar sources.

Personnel and management

Klaus Koch has been the director and editor-in-chief of Gesundheitsinformation.de since May 2011 . In 2018 there were 24 employees working for Gesundheitsinformation.de. They are trained in communication, nursing and social sciences as well as in the field of evidence-based health information and medicine.
