history
During the expansion of the Dakar – Niger railway between Thiès and Kayes , which took place between 1907 and 1923, the town of Guinguinéo received a station at which a branch line to the port of Kaolack branched off. The importance of the railway line for the development of the city can still be seen from the fact that all streets run parallel or at right angles to the railway line like a chessboard .
The city was the seat of an arrondissement in the Gossas department in the Fatick region until 2008 and has been the departmental prefecture in the Kaolack region since then.
population
The last censuses showed the following population figures for the city:
year | Residents |
---|---|
1988 | 12,887 |
2002 | 12,973 |
2013 | 16,386 |
traffic
No national highways run through Guinguinéo, but the Dakar – Niger railway line runs right through it, which is important for freight traffic in the peanut basin and with neighboring Mali.
Via Kahone , a dead straight road connects Guinguinéo with the Kaolack airport, 18 km away, and with the national air transport network.
