history

Kahone was a central marketplace built around a sacred tree in the early 16th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries the place consisted of a number of different neighboring tribes who had wide, open fields around them. The slowly growing population became increasingly Muslim and the traditional religion that held its rites on the opposite island of Kouyong disappeared.

It is still the residence of King Mbaye Badiane I.

traffic

Kahone is on the N 1 national road , which follows the right north bank of the Saloum at some distance. The N1 connects Dakar, Mbour and Fatick in the west with Kaffrine and Tambacounda in the east and continues at Kidira over the Malian border to Kayes .

On the N1, between Kahone and Kaolack on the south-western outskirts, lies the airport of this region, the Kaolack airfield .
