Kaffrine is a city in the center of Senegal . It is the capital of the Kaffrine region and the Kaffrine department .
Geographical location
Kaffrine is located in a vast lowland in the central peanut growing area of Senegal, the peanut basin . This is drained to the sea north of the city through the bed of the Saloum , which only carries water here during the rainy season.
Most of the city has a chessboard-like road pattern designed on a drawing board, which is based on the railway line running through the city in a west-east direction and on the national road that runs at an acute angle to the south.
Kaolack, the nearest regional prefecture, is to the west and is 60 km away. It is 249 km to the capital Dakar .
population
The last censuses showed the following population figures for the city:
year | Residents |
---|---|
1988 | 16,957 |
2002 | 25,768 |
2013 | 39,537 |
traffic
Kaffrine owes its importance as a rest stop to its location on the national road N 1 , which leads from Dakar in the west to Tambacounda and further near Kidira over the Malian border to Kayes .
The railway line from Dakar to Bamako , which is important for freight traffic with neighboring Mali, runs through the middle of Kaffrine.
