François Morel (composer)
François Morel (born March 14, 1926 in Montreal ; † January 14, 2018 ) was a Canadian composer , pianist and conductor .
Morel studied from 1944 to 1953 at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec with Claude Champagne , Jean Papineau-Couture , Isabelle Delorme , Arthur Letondal , Germaine Malépart and Edmond Trudel . His friend Gérald Gagnier introduced him to the beginnings of orchestral conducting.
In 1953 Leopold Stokowski performed his Antiphonie in Carnegie Hall , making him known as a composer. In 1954 he partnered with Serge Garant and Gilles Tremblay to perform contemporary Canadian and European music. In 1956 the group Musique de notre temps emerged from this, to which Otto Joachim and Jeanne Landry belonged alongside Morel and Garant .
Morel worked for the CBC from 1956 through the late 1970s . He produced the festivals program for radio ; In addition to compositions for the radio, he wrote the soundtracks for several television series. He also taught composition at the Institut Nazareth from 1959 to 1961 and was director of the Académie de musique du Québec (AMQ) from 1972 to 1978 .
From 1979 to 1980 Morel taught orchestration and composition at the University of Montreal , and from the same year also at Laval University .
Numerous works by Morel were premiered by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra : in 1960 under Igor Markevitch the composition Boréal , which was influenced by Edgar Varèses , in 1964 under Thomas Schipper's L'Étoile noire based on the painting of the same name by Paul-Émile Borduas , in 1978 under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos Jeux at the opening of the 78th session of the International Olympic Committee and in 1988 under Charles Dutoit the Aux couleurs du ciel, inspired by the book Poussières d'étoiles by the astrophysicist Hubert Reeves .
