Otto Joachim (composer)

Otto Joachim , CQ (born October 13, 1910 in Düsseldorf ; † July 30, 2010 in Montreal ) was a Canadian composer and violist of German origin.

Life

Joachim studied at the University of Düsseldorf until 1928 and then in Cologne until 1931 . In 1934 he fled from the National Socialists first to Singapore , then to Shanghai . In 1949 he settled in Montreal . From 1956 he was a member of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for twenty years and taught at the same time, first at McGill University , then at the Montreal Conservatory . In 1958 he was the founder and until 1969 also the director of the Montreal Consort of Ancient Instruments ; In addition, Joachim founded the Montreal String Quartet in 1955 and his own studio for electronic music in 1956 - the first private studio of its kind in Canada. His compositions include Illumination II , Tribute to St. Romanus and Contrasts .

The permanent exhibition of the Musée canadien des civilizations in Hull includes two paintings by his hand, Triptych and Dodecaphonism , as well as several replicas of Renaissance instruments that he owned.
