Damião Vaz d'Almeida (born April 28, 1951 in Príncipe ) was Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe from 2004 to 2005 .

Political career

Damião Vaz d'Almeida comes from the island of Príncipe , where he was President of the Parliament of this district and from April 29, 1995 to April 12, 2002, President of the autonomous regional government of Príncipe. He belongs to the Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe (MLSTP-PSD), founded in 1960 , which ruled as a unity party from 1975 until the introduction of democracy in 1990/1991 . In May 1998 he became its vice-president. He was a member of the governments of Gabriel Arcanjo da Costa and Maria das Neves from 2002 to 2003 and as Minister for Labor, Employment and Solidarity between 2003 and 2004.

After the dismissal of Maria das Neves for corruption charges by President Fradique de Menezes on September 15, 2004, Almeida was proposed by his party as Prime Minister and appointed by the President on September 17, 2004. On September 18, 2004 he took office and formed a government from members of his social democratic MLSTP-PSD and the Acçao Democrática Independente (AID). His cabinet included Ovídio Pequeno as foreign minister and Adelino Castelo David as finance minister.

On June 2, 2005, he submitted his resignation and explained this step with the increasingly poor relationship with President Menezes, which made further cooperation impossible. In addition, his government came under pressure from a public service strike . Six days later, the previous governor of the central bank Maria do Carmo Silveira , also MLSTP-PSD, became his successor. He was later ambassador to Portugal from 2009 to 2012 and most recently to Angola between 2012 and 2017 .
