Maria do Carmo Silveira

Maria do Carmo Trovoada Pires de Carvalho Silveira (born February 14, 1961 in São Tomé and Príncipe ) is an economist and politician. From June 8, 2005 to April 21, 2006, she was Prime Minister and Minister of Planning and Finance of the African island state of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Life

She did her PhD with a thesis on socio-economic development policy at the University of Lisbon , which was followed by a master's degree at the École nationale d'administration (ENA) in Strasbourg . She then completed postgraduate studies at the ENA and at the Donetsk University in Ukraine .

From 1988 she worked a. a. in development cooperation in the European Community and at the US FED , before working as an economist at government agencies in her home country from 1994.

She was Governor of the Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe from 1999 until her appointment as Prime Minister on June 8, 2005 , and again from 2011 to 2016.

From 2008 to 2011 she taught at the Universidade Lusíada de São Tomé e Príncipe , a branch of the Portuguese University of Lusíada , which opened in 2006 as the first University of São Tomé.

At the 11th Conference of Heads of State of the Community of Portuguese- Speaking Countries (CPLP) on October 31 and November 1, 2016 in Brasília , Silveira was elected Secretary General of the CPLP for the two-year term in 2017/2018. She took office on January 9, 2017.

Silveira is a member of the Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe (MLSTP-PSD) party, the largest parliamentary group in the National Assembly. She is the second woman to hold the post of prime minister in the country.

Maria do Carmo Silveira is married and has three children.
